People who are playing collusive games of mutual self deception are in tension as they pretend to be able to transcend these various kinds of human limits. There is tension even if the pretense is only internal with no inter-personal dishonesty. There is greater tension when the tension pertains to trying to maintain external appearances of integrity, when in fact there is internal disintegration. Much energy is wasted pretending that it is possible to do more than can be done in the limited time available with the limited energy available. Good intentions do not always lead to accomplishments and the fulfillment of expectations. Promises made to self and/or other without due regard for present human limitations cannot be fulfilled, and there is tension as the reality of nonfulfillment comes closer to being undeniably evident. When planning and budgets get out of balance there is increased tension as the game of pretending that everything can be paid for runs to its disintegrative end. Dishonesty about limited financial resources and unbalanced trade relationships generates tension in the efforts to maintain dishonest appearances in the face of mounting evidence that dishonesty is being practiced. People often refuse to deal honestly with the facts of life pertaining to the beginning of life and the ending of life. There is much dishonesty about sexuality, sexual diseases, unhealthy sexual relationships, sex education, pregnancy and abortion: as regards the beginning of individual lives. There is also much dishonesty about declining human vitality, terminal illness, preventing death, postponing death, accepting death, and how we regard people who have died. In all such dishonesty there is tension between what it true and what is pretended to be true. Such tension generates dis-ease and many forms of disease in traditional medical terms. Many people pretend to be able to do more with knowledge than can be done with knowledge; and pretend to know more with greater confidence than the facts warrant. Often people dishonestly pretend that their knowledge and techniques can cope in healthy ways with dilemmas which are not technical problems and permit no solution based upon knowledge and technology. Such pretense generates tension and disease as the tension is increased between the truth and the artificially sustained appearance. The pretense is a pretense of transcending human limits in ways which cannot occur. Healthy living involves accepting the reality of real human limits and engaging in open and honest relationships within the context of real limits. Pretending to transcend limits does not offer any true promise of healthy fulfillment. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
