We would do well to develop the ability to search for lacks which might be playing central roles in our diseases in a broader sense. Our diseases may be rooted in a lack of: (1) Concern for communal integrity due to an exclusive concern for personal welfare. (2) Concern for personal integrity due to an exclusive concern for communal law, order and conformity. (3) Adequate nouns, phrases, prepositions, and verbs with which to point to realities, relationships and actions. (4) Personal and communal memories and understanding of the past in terms of which to anticipate consequences of current beliefs, attitudes, choices, and actions. (5) Knowledge of reliable patterns of natural processes in terms of which to anticipate natural consequences. (6) Meditation, reflection, prayer, and consciousness by which to transcend collusions, addictions and codependent behavior patterns. (7) Openness, honesty, intimacy, affection, dialogue, listening, sexuality, and responsiveness to serve as integrative processes. (8) Objectivity, systematics, theory, concentration, and specialization to deal with technical problems. (9) Wisdom to deal honestly with dilemmas which are not technical problems. (10) A sense of balance and propriety which is not rooted in conformity, but in an understanding of the essence of healthy living. When there is a lack which leads to disease, there is a lack of proper balance; often due to an exclusive concern for and attention being concentrated upon some values and ideals which are regarded as being worthy of exclusive worship to the point of idolatry.
