Some assumptions are made regarding cause and effect in inter-personal relationships; but rarely are the assumptions carefully tested or considered to see if it is wise to continue to assume that it is helpful to believe them. Often people assume that it is possible to control the behavior of others; by promises of rewards, by threats of punishment, by rational argumentation, etc. Not as often do people examine the assumptions and attitudes which characterize the people whom they wish to control. The essential relationships are inter-personal relationships which are not fully defined by the beliefs, desires, convictions, and intentions of people in positions of authority. Equally important are the beliefs, desires, convictions, and intentions of the people who are the focus of the concern of the authorities. Many criminals, addicts, and students behave in ways which are guided by considerations other than reason, logic, and attention to likely consequences. To influence such people we need to understand how they perceive, think about, and respond to the world as they know it. It is counter-productive to assume that what would influence us will influence them in the same way. We should not expect them to respond to our behavior as we would respond to the same behavior towards us on the part of other authorities. It is futile to say that they should respond to us as we think that they should. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
