The important question is what kind of sexual education occurs every day. It does occur every day either deliberately or inadvertently, consciously or subconsciously, wisely or foolishly. Since sexual education does occur every day, it is important to discover ways to make sexual education healthy, rather than unhealthy. It is unhealthy to play dishonest games of mutual self deception regarding sexual education and sexual behavior. It is unhealthy to pretend that sexual education is not taking place every day in most human contexts. It is unhealthy to pretend to be asexual creatures. It is unhealthy to pretend to be purely rational creatures. It is unhealthy to pretend that all our actions are motivated by careful planning and logical considerations. Such pretenses are often central in unhealthy sexual education. Sexual creatures demonstrate to each other sexual possibilities by the assumptions and beliefs about each other which they demonstrate to each other in how they relate to each other in the presence of each other. Sexual education is essentially reflexive; it cannot be essentially objective. It is unhealthy to pretend that objective considerations can be the central considerations in healthy sexual education. It is unhealthy to pretend that reflexive considerations should play no role in sexual education. Central to sexual education are the assumptions and beliefs about each other which lead to various kinds of interpersonal relationships. Sexual education has to do with the development and transmission of such basic assumptions and beliefs regarding intimate relationships. The beliefs and assumptions are more basic to human health than are objective physical relationships and behaviors. Attempts to control objective physical relationships and behaviors will be unlikely to have healthy effects upon the fundamental beliefs and assumptions which guide sexual feelings, desires, expressions, invitations, behaviors and intimate relationships. It is the fundamental beliefs and assumptions which need to be reached and influenced in healthy ways in healthy sexual education. Healthy sexual education entails healthy demonstrations of healthy assumptions and beliefs regarding: intimacy, vulnerability, trust, risk, security, privacy, identity, independence, interdependence, love, charity, justice, eros, care, and self esteem. Such demonstrations cannot be contained or delivered in books, lectures, or scholarly research papers.
