In repression one is pretending not to be what one in reality might be with integrity. In pretense one is pretending to be what one in reality is not, and cannot be with integrity. In both pretense and repression there is self violence in that there is self coercion in trying to appear to be what one in reality is not. Doing such violence to oneself is disintegrative, just as cutting off one's hand is disintegrative. The work of Love is to facilitate reconciliation where there is alienation and disintegration; authenticity where there is pretense and repression. People who are authentically in Love facilitate reconciliation where there is separation and alienation, honesty where there is deception, openness where there is secrecy, security where there is defensiveness, and healing where there is coercion and disease.
