While pretending to be objective, they cannot view themselves objectively. It is virtually impossible for them to question their assumptions, or to take seriously any other person's questions regarding fundamental assumptions. Other people at a fundamental level regard many relationships between humans as essentially personal, friendly, and intimate within contexts of healthy vulnerability; as essentially a quest for mutual knowledge through open and honest dialogue. Such people enter into manipulative human relationships only with regret, even though they understand that such relationships are inevitable among finite creatures. The first kind of people understand human relationships as manipulative processes and cannot conceive of them ever being essentially any different than manipulative relationships. The second kind of people seek to transcend the manipulative processes which characterize so many human relationships. The first kind usually do not understand the second kind of people, although the second kind of people often do understand the first kind of people, and seek to liberate them from their imprisoning assumptions.
