In the objective way of perception, the specific role of each part of the whole is an essential part of the whole process of understanding, predicting and controlling the whole to advance human advantage. When the objective way of perception is transferred into the realm of inter-personal relationships people commonly analyze the whole of a community into the roles which individual people have played and so perceive tragic consequences as assignable to individual choices made by individual people. The transferral of the impersonal objective way of analysis into the personal domain often leads to analytic efforts which assign fault and guilt to individuals who have participated in the whole process. Such assignment of fault and guilt is based upon some theory of cause and effect in regards to human reactions/responses to events. People are treated as if they were only isolated objective elements of an objective process. Such a theory fails to take proper account of the reflexive communal processes which are central to human interactions. Any theory which leads people to treat each other as objects that are free of reflexive considerations is bound to be a tragic theory; i.e., a theory which leads to tragic consequences which flow from trying diligently to fulfill ideals and values. People do not lead meaningful lives when they treat each other as if they are non- reflective objects. To assign fault for tragic consequences to individuals chosen as sacrificial scape goats, does not help the community to transcend its misguided objective theory of human relationships. The assignment of fault and guilt is usually more alienative than it is integrative. A preoccupation with fault and guilt does not lead to the kind of understanding which is essential to Love. Love does not seek to achieve a manipulative objective understanding in which assignment of fault and guilt play important roles. People who are preoccupied with fault, guilt, debts, responsibility, punishment, etc. back into the future without being able to see where they are going. A compulsive preoccupation with looking back does not lead wisely into the future; yet, the past cannot wisely be ignored. Whether or not the past is wisely regarded depends upon the attitudes, the habits of mind and heart, which guide the consideration of the past. We need to be open and honest with each other about all decisions, actions, consequences, and our understandings of them. We pay a great price in alienation and disintegration if we are preoccupied with assigning fault, guilt, debts, responsibility and punishment with regard to the past. The fault for the tragic consequences often lies as much with the communal attitudes as with individual participants. Excessive reductionist analysis can mislead people into tragic misunderstandings of the nature of their dilemmas. Treating the tragic consequences of such misunderstandings as problems caused by individual scape goats who are worthy of sacrifice, does not help the community transcend the misleading, and tragic method of analysis.
