Any systematic failure to move through the full range of dimensions of human action, experience and consciousness is a warning sign that disintegrative processes may be operating. Healthy communal life entails a wide range of personal and communal actions, experiences and consciousness. Some dimensions of being whole human beings in an integrative community are not fulfilled: for lack of time and energy, due to a disposition to concentrate on a few dimensions through specialization where ability is great, due to a lack of ability in other dimensions, because of early frustrations & embarrassments, for lack of encouragement, due to communal discouragement, because of active inhibition through social pressure, etc. A systematic lack of persons in a community moving through each of the essential dimensions of human action, experience and consciousness is a sign of disintegration. No one person can actively move though all such dimensions of being fully human, yet on the whole members of an integrative community include it many people who are respected and encouraged in their movements through all the dimensions of being human with integrity. A community which is unaware of a systematic lack of persons in the community moving through some of the essential dimensions of human action, experience and consciousness is like a community unaware that all its fire-fighters have died and have not been replaced. A systematic absence of activity, experience and/or consciousness is a symptom of communal disintegration. The danger to communal integrity is minimal if some particular lack is accidental through random fluctuations of individual dispositions, abilities, desires, choices, etc. The danger is great if the lack is due to systematic patterns of neglect, frustration, embarrassment, discouragement, inhibition, repressions, coercion, violence, etc. To maintain communal and personal integrity each community needs to counter such systematic patterns with communal and individual responses openly and honestly designed to compensate for their disintegrative effects. Where there is a lack there should be an investigation to come to an understanding of the factors which have occasioned the lack, and efforts made to deal with such factors in integrative ways. The most difficult step will be to become aware of the presence of the lack; for collusive factors are likely to be involved in the generation of the systematic patterns which lead to the lack of activity, experience, and/or consciousness of the lacking essential dimension of whole living.
