It is not so common for teachers and professors to engage in teaching and communication regarding the motivations of open and honest communication. Failures in communication more often may be traced to contexts which inhibit communication, than to the lack of techniques of communication. Wherever techniques of communication are lacking, the pervasive presence of contexts which have inhibited the practice of open and honest communication has no doubt played a major role in inhibiting the development of effective techniques of communication. It is foolish to focus heavily upon techniques of communication outside the context of efforts to provide authentic encouragement of open and honest communication. People who do not feel secure enough to communicate openly and honestly whatever they most want to communicate, are not very likely to be concerned with the development of effective techniques of communication. People who feel so insecure that they are unwilling to be vulnerable in open and honest communication, will be seeking to develop techniques by which to give misleading impressions. They are not particularly interested in learning the techniques which can be used to give clear, open and honest expression of what they have really experienced, what they have really perceived, what they really believe, and the focus of their own faith. Encouragement of open and honest communication is not a technical process. Encouragement has to do with courage, not with techniques. Encouragement has to do with providing contexts which minimize the need for the courage to take honesty risks. Encouragement has to do with eliciting trust by meriting trust. Encouragement has to do with giving the gift of security in which it is safe to be vulnerable in intimately open and honest communication. Encouragement of open and honest communication is not a technical process; thus the encouragement of the authentic use of techniques of open and honest communication is not a technical process, even though the apparent focus of the process may often appear to be techniques.
