The instructors who have sought to change students' perceptual systems have rarely given much attention to the previous perceptual systems, the process of change, or the character of change which takes place. Science instruction has traditionally centered upon the content of texts which summarize the knowledge and techniques of scientists. The content of texts is important. The previous perceptual system of students is important. The process of change is important. The assessment of where the actual change leads to is important. Neglecting any of these important realities undermines the integrity of the instructional process. It is a collusive game of mutual self deception to pretend otherwise. The crisis in science education has roots in games of mutual self deception regarding the dynamics of students' changing perceptions, attitudes and values in the context of existing patterns of science education. The process of science education needs to increase the amount of attention which science educators give to students' preconceptions, convictions, feelings, attitudes, values and habits of mind and heart.
