     Science professors in universities and colleges teach
much more than technical skills and content.

     Science professors in universities and colleges teach
their  students the attitudes and habits of mind and heart
which  characterize  the  years they  spent  in  the  pure
research   activities   required  as  a  prerequisite   to
professing their beliefs as science professors.

     It  is important for college and university  students
to  understand the attitudes and habits of mind and  heart
which  are generated in their professors by many years  of
pure research training in our graduate schools.

     If college and university students do not  understand
the process of inculcation of habits of mind and heart  in
graduate  schools,   they themselves are bound  to  become
imprisoned  in  the  same habits of mind  and  heart;   to
acquire the same attitudes without proper critical thought
or understanding.

     Especially  in  liberal arts colleges students  might
reasonably hope to be liberated from thoughtless habits of
mind  and  heart.  Liberal arts colleges are dedicated  to
liberating  students from provincialism.  They should thus
be dedicated to liberating students from the provincialism
of  narrow graduate school training which usually leads to
over specialization, rather than to scholarly integration.

     The  habits  of  mind and heart of  science  graduate
schools   are   dominated   by   objectivity,    analysis,
quantification, linear processes, verbalization, etc. Such
domination  originates in exclusive attitudes which regard
as  inadequate any affirmations which are not  coupled  to
denials of paradoxical complimentary affirmations.

     The  denials are rooted in human finitude which  does
not permit humans an opportunity to acquire an infinity of
knowledge  and skills.  Since only a finite amount can  be
acquired and used,  much must be ignored.  Insecure people
can not feel secure in the knowledge that what little they
know is not all of the ultimately important truth; so they
play  games  of mutual self deception according  to  which
games they know all the important truths, other truths are
unimportant or false.  In graduate schools they learn that
their  truths  are  the important  truths.   They  acquire
exclusive habits of mind and heart,  and become imprisoned
therein.   Then  they go out and profess their beliefs  in
