Each question which is asked affirms a set of assumptions, values and ideals. People who internalize a question without careful examination internalize the assumptions, values and ideals which are embedded in the question. Questions do not leave persons who are answerers as free as it may seem. People can be imprisoned by misleading questions. Escape from such prisons is exceedingly difficult because the prisons are virtually invisible; often constructed by participants in collusive games of mutual self deception. Asking misleading questions can be part of the ritual of worship of a community; e.g., "Master, how can I be saved?" Such a question suggests that salvation is an individualistic reality, when in reality salvation is always a communal as well as a individualistic reality. "What are the most fundamental constituents of reality?" affirms the assumption that the key to understanding is analysis rather than synthesis. The question leads to disintegration rather than to integration. "Is the phenomena objectively real?" suggests that personal relationships which are essentially subjective in nature are not real and so not worthy of respect. The question leads to objectification of all relationships; and so to personal disintegration. "Who is responsible for Jack's embarrassment?" suggests that when Jack is embarrassed it is possible to wisely pin the blame on somebody else. The reality of embarrassment is as much an internal subjective reality as it is an inevitable response to an external objective cause. Jack is largely responsible for his own habits of mind and heart; and so for his own embarrassment. The serious asking of a question is not a value neutral act, for it leads to an investment of human time which is a limited human resource. Each question which is asked affirms a set of assumptions, values and ideals. People who internalize a question without careful examination internalize the assumptions, values and ideals which are embedded in the question. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
