All   the  following  factors  contribute   to   the
difficulty which addicts,   codependent and colluders have
in enjoying recovery from their common disease:

The  disease  begins  with  and  so  is  rooted   in
childhood  attitudes and  habitual   behaviors  which  are
encouraged    by parents,  school,  church,  business  and
government.

The  disease  involves systematic  deceptions  which
conceal   the   disease  and embarrasses   recovery   from
the disease.

The   disease   is  a  communal   game   of   mutual
manipulations    with  rules  which  conceal    themselves
through   the enforcement of the rules by the players  who
cannot  safely articulate the rules openly and honestly.

Perfectionists  who  play the games of  the  disease
can      not    honestly   admit    to    the     systemic
imperfections  which characterize the disease.

Those  who  are the victims of the disease  can  not
learn   from their mistakes because they are not  free  to
admit to making mistakes.

The  disease generates  confused conceptions of  the
nature of reality and the disease.  The notions of what is
possible and what is impossible are confused.

Those  who have the disease covertly transmit it  to
those  who have not yet become victims of it;   concealing
the manner of transmission from all involved.

Many  people  who are victims of  the  disease  have
accomplished   much  and control much that elicits respect
by people who have not yet become victims of the disease.

The disease is not rooted in objective causes,  even
though  many  apparently     objective   causes   of   the
disease    divert  attention  away from the  central  non-
objective features  of the disease.

The   disease   cannot   be  cured   by    objective
experts   working  within   the paradigm of  the  standard
medical  model    which  depends  upon  intervention   and
control by objective medical experts.

Those  who try to take control and try to  eliminate
the  destructive  consequences  of  the  disease   through
controlling  behaviors  are themselves participants in the
in the process of the disease.

Scientists  cannot  understand,  predict and control
the   progress  of the disease because  the  behaviors  of
most    scientists    are    part    of    the    disease:
effectively dealing  with the disease cannot  be objective
in  nature, cannot  be scientific.

The   words  which  are  used  in   discussing   the
consequences    of  the disease have meanings  which  have
been  confused by the disease in such a way as to  obscure
differences which,   if seen,  might expose the disease to
revealing insights by victims of the disease.

The    disease    has   focused    attention    upon
disintegrative  values and ideals,   and so has undermined
the  foundation  of the personal  and  communal  integrity
which are essential  to coping with the disease.

Even leaders in the philosophical,  theological  and
religious   communities have succumbed to and been seduced
by  the  manipulative  efforts   which are  characteristic
of those controlled  by the disease.

The  disease is both personal and communal  in  ways
which  interact  back and forth so that the disease cannot
be dealt with  as just a personal disease;     it must  be
