     High    levels    of   intellectual   and    rational
sophistication are not sure signs of integrity;   consider
the highly sophisticated and  specialized  graduate school
training programs of the Americans in the 1900's.

     High  levels of technological sophistication are  not
sure  signs  of integrity;    consider  the  sophisticated
military arms race of the mid 1900's.

High   levels   of  resource consumption  are   not   sure
signs  of integrity;  consider the consumptive behavior of
Americans in the 1900's.

     High  levels of the use of religious language are not
sure  signs  of  integrity;  consider the  T.V.   preacher
scandals of the 1980's in America.

     High  levels  of support from a large fraction of the
people  in  a  geographic region is not  a  sure  sign  of
integrity; consider the support which Hitler received.

     High levels of self confidence and conviction are not
a  sure  signs of integrity;  consider the witch hunts  of
the anti-communists of the 1950's in America.

     Great amounts of intellect,  reason,  sophistication,
technology,    resources,    religious   language,    self
confidence,  and conviction can be used by large fractions
of a population in  addictive  collusive behavior which is
tragically disintegrative.

     It  is essential for each community to recognize that
many    respected  signs  are  not  necessarily  signs  of
integrity,  even   though  those  signs  are  often  taken
by most people to  be  signs  of  respectability.

     It is helpful to  articulate ways of recognizing both
disintegrative and integrative behaviors.

     It  is  essential for each community to know  how  to
recognize  sure signs of disintegrative behavior,  and  to
talk  openly  and  honestly about  such  signs  when  they
appear.   In the absence of such recognition and  dialogue
disintegrative behaviors are sure  to  work systematically
to undermine the  personal  and  communal  integrity  of a
community  until  it disintegrates;  as  have  many  great
civilizations.

     The   following  are  sure  signs  of  disintegrative
behavior:

     (1)  The failure of leading members of a community to
openly and honestly talk about serious problems which face
the community.

     (2)  The failure of members of a community to  openly
and   honestly To  honestly    be in dialogue about  their
major  interests, desires and  concerns.

     (3)  A  high  level of respect  accorded  to   people
who  are  manipulative of others  through  misleading  and
clearly dishonest behavior.

     (4)  A   pattern   of  communal    behaviors    which
are motivated  and  lead  by fears which  are   uninformed
and compulsive in character.

     (5)  Intolerance       by       powerful       people
towards   creative   non-conformists   who  do  not   show
respect  towards  traditional  attitudes,   behaviors  and
conventions.

     (6)  A  general   pattern   of   all  members  of   a
community  talking   openly  and  honestly  about  serious
problems which face the   community   and   which   are of
concern to  members  of  the community.

     (7)  Fearless   willingness   of   most   members  of
the community to confront in a informed and charitable way
all  forms of addictive behavior,   to  help  all  members
of      the     community     avoid      falling      into
addictive/codependent patterns of behavior.

     (8)  A   pattern   of  open  and   honest    dialogue
about  one's  own  experiences  wherever  they  relate  to
other  people's problems and theoretical statements  which
presume   to  summarize  wide  ranges  of  previous  human
