Are the consequences determined by natural physical laws, by our attitudes, by social conventions, by higher powers? Can we free ourselves of the tragic consequences of respecting ideals and values which affirm the worth of freedom, spontaneity, creativity, relaxation, etc.; without balanced respect for the importance of both personal and communal integrity. Much moralizing and legalistic discipline has confused the issues. Confusion is often generated by our playing addictive games of mutual self deception. It is not easy to clarify our confused ideals and values when we are trapped within collusions dealing with high ideals and values. Moral injunctions and legal rules are presumably intended to help promote personal and communal integrity. They work about as effectively as lecturing to the alcoholic or drug addict. Addictive behavior can not be controlled by manipulative procedures; whether the addictive behavior has alcohol, drugs, money, consumer goods, sexuality, food, power, or whatever else as its apparent focus. The addict is not at ease, is dis-eased. The addict needs to rediscover integrity, including honesty about addictive behavior patterns of whatever foci. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
