Confronting the dishonesty of addictive behavior is difficult when the addict is a respected and powerful person who is playing dishonest games of mutual self deception with other powerful persons who are respected in spite of their addictive patterns of behavior. It is no small feat to confront the dishonesty of powerful people and survive. It is a great challenge to confront the addictive dishonesty of addicts whom the community does not respect. It is a greater challenge to helpfully confront the addictive dishonesty of addicts whom the community does respect. The confrontations can be assisted by an educational process through which members of the community at large become aware of the common behavioral characteristics of the multitude of manifestations of addictive attitudes, mind-sets, habits, beliefs, values, ideals, etc. Such descriptions can be separated from the respect which is accorded to powerful addicts. It is important that people have a clear image of the behavioral manifestations of addiction, so that they can recognize them even when they show up in the behaviors of powerful people.
