Jack and Jill want to be members of an honest community, but they do not know many, if any, others who want to be as honest as they want to be. Jack and Jill discover each other and each other's desire to be honest and open. They develop an open and honest relationship with each other and become inter- dependent in very intimate ways. Their society would not approve of them knowing the things they know and discuss, for such knowledge would undermine the collusions which make the society work. Jack and Jill can not be honest with the rest of society about their relationship and the revelations which have come to them through their relationship. Jack and Jill become more and more dependent upon each other and in keeping with their addictive society's encouragement of addictive relationships, they become addicted to each other. The society discourages honesty about addiction and Jack and Jill as members of the society find that they can not be honest about the addictive character/aspects of their relationship. Jack and Jill are in a double double bind. Such double double binds can be relaxed as society learns to be honest about its addictive structures and relationships, and learns that it can recover from addiction through honesty. People who are trapped in such double double binds need to learn to recognize the characteristics of addictive behavior, and to deal with them for what they are. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
