Ignorance is not conducive to survival. In the absence of reliable information regarding the consequences of decisions and actions, mistakes are repeated in deadly ways. The promotion of reliable feed back is essential to both personal and communal integrity. It is thus important that open and honest discussions be promoted regarding how people perceive and feel about their own behavior, and the behavior of other members of the community. Only through such open and honest behavior can a community take advantage of all the possible information about the natural consequences of the decisions and actions of its members. In the absence of such reliable information the members of the community will be the victims of ignorance which could have been avoided. Communities which suffer from systemic addiction can not perceive the ways in which their behaviors are not informed by the about considerations. In such communities collusions and taboos operate to blind members of the community to important pieces of information about the consequences of their decisions and action. Because of their chosen forms of ignorance, such people persist in doing what is not in their best interest. They need to become aware of the ways in which their highest ideals and values lead them into disintegrative addictive behavior patterns with deadly consequences. To enjoy both personal and communal integrity, communities and their members must strive to give all members of the community security in the context of vulnerability. Only when security is given to vulnerable people can the people as a whole feel secure in the context of intimate relationships which are open and honest. Absent such contexts, people will feel it is necessary to play defensive games to deal with their sense of insecurity. Those collusive games of mutual and self deception reduce the sense of security, and justify the felt need to play the defensive games which generate the sense of insecurity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
