Collusions imprison people in games of mutual self deception. Players can not through technological developments find ways to improve their game in such a way so as to quit the game. Players of the game are trapped in an exclusive system of values and ideals according to which dishonesty is essential. Through revelation players may become aware of the limitations of the game, and how the game leads to personal and communal disintegration. Through revelations some participants may become free to know themselves honestly. They may come to value self knowledge more than conformity to the dishonest rules of the games of mutual self deception. Through revelation they may see clearly the personal and communal disintegration which are occasioned by all games of mutual self deception. Then self revelation may become possible; they may first learn how to reveal themselves to themselves and each other with openness and honesty. Revelations come from outside the game and transcend the game. Participants in games of mutual self deception must be dishonest with themselves as an essential step toward being dishonest with others. The rules of the games require conformity to communal "truths" which do not conform to personal experiences. To conform self to the communal rules of the game each participant must repress awareness many of personal experiences; thus participants are not free to reveal themselves to themselves, much less to each other. Honest intimacy opens participants to punishment for failure to conform to the "truths" of the dishonest game. Honest intimacy entails vulnerability. Players can not trust others, for every player is a potential opponent. Revelations which set people free to know themselves threaten the collusion and the way of life of a collusion. Such revelations are terrifying and are not welcome to "true" believers. In terror they are likely to become fanatical in their convictions to compensate for their doubts and subconscious recognition of their lack of personal and communal integrity. Players of games of mutual self deception may escape from their collusive games through prayer for personal and communal integrity made possible through transcendent revelations from outside their games. Such escape is often terrifying. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
