             %REASONS FOR EVADING CONCEPT INTEGRITY 870319

     Scholars have  not focused much  attention  upon  the
concept of "integrity".  Why?

     To  recognize  the  importance of both  personal  and
communal integrity is to be faced with the futility of all
fanatical  convictions  and  all  pretenses  of  salvation
through  exclusive  excellence.   People want  to  achieve
salvation.    To  recognize  the  ultimate  importance  of
integrity is to recognize  that we can not achieve our own
salvation  by any means.   We prefer to  delude  ourselves
into believing that we can by appropriate efforts  achieve
our own salvation.   To continue to believe we can achieve
our own salvation we must  avoid  recognizing the ultimate
importance  of  both personal and  communal  integrity  in
dynamic balance with each other.

     To  scholars  knowledge is the  means  to  salvation,
analysis  is the means to putting knowledge  to  practical
use,   and  technology  is  the  practical  expression  of
abstract  knowledge.    Even though the integrity  of  the
intellectual  enterprise has been recognized as important,
the  importance  of integrity in a broader sense  has  not
been  the focus of scholarly discussions and publications.
The  word  "integrity"   does  not  often appear  in  book
catalogues  and indexes of scholarly  libraries,   because
"integrity"  has not played a central role in the lives of
scholars.

     One  might  think that some synonym has been used  in
place  of  the word "integrity".   That hypothesis is  not
tenable,   because it is not possible to find  a  commonly
used synonym for "integrity"  which appears frequently  in
