         %IDEOLOGICAL DOUBLE BINDS CRACK COSMIC EGG 870317

     People who are committed to an ideological system may
be  double  bound  by  the ideological  system  and  their
addictive  dependence  upon the system to  maintain  their
positions of respect, power, and economic well being.  The
ideological system may be predicated upon the  maintenance
of  conflict with those outside the system;  or may entail
the  maintenance  of  an internal collusion which  is  not
negotiable; or both.

     People who  transcend ideological  double  binds will
find it difficult to offer opportunities  to those trapped
in ideological double binds to  escape  from those  double
binds.  Those who are trapped in double binds may perceive
the possibility of escape  as a terrifying threat to their
security, a  crack in their cosmic egg;  a threat to their
integrity,  to their very ground of being.   Those who are
trapped   in   double  binds  may  be  committed  to   the
maintenance  of  conflict,   not  to  the  resolution   of
conflict.   Genuine conflict resolution to them appears as
a threatening miracle to be avoided at all costs.

     The  member  of the Communist Party in high position,
needs  the  threat  of external  nations  to  justify  the
"temporary"  powers of the state and the sacrifices  which
the people must endure.    The technocrat  employed by the
military industrial complex, needs the doctrine  of  peace
through  strength to justify the continuation of the  arms
race  with  like  technocrats on  the  other  side.    The
religious fundamentalist needs the fanatical conviction of
faith,  to compensate  for the lack  of  self  esteem  and
knowledge  which flows from self enforced ignorance  about
complementary  perspectives.   The compulsively  objective
scientist needs the certainty that there is no possibility
of  bias in scientific evidence and logic,  to  compensate
for   their   ignorance   of   the   dynamics   reflexive:
relationships, experiences,  perceptions, and interpretat-
ions of sensual stimuli.

     It will be helpful to have as many people as possible
be   aware  of  the  possibility  of  people,    including
themselves, to be trapped in ideological double binds.  It
will   also  be  helpful  to  focus  attention  upon   the
intellectual  challenge of creating ways in  which  people
can escape from the ideological double binds in which they
find themselves trapped.  Then it will be charitable to so
act  as to leave people free to seek and find  their  ways
