             %COMMUNAL SYMBOLS MEANING AND CREATION 870308

     The   life   of  a  community  clusters  around   its
communally shared symbols:  words spoken, written or sung;
music, dance, other body language, games played,  parades,
contests engaged in,  business transacted,   computations,
intimacies, etc.

     Communal  symbols are not objective  realities  which
are  discovered.   Their reality and significance are  the
creations  of  their  community;  their community  is  the
creation  of the symbols:   each creates the other and  is
given meaning by the other.

     Communities and communal symbols are born, evolve and
die.   Those who do not participate in the process can not
know  the process with full understanding.   The processes
are  not fully known to non-participants,  and can not  be
judged  without   bias   by  non-participants.    The non-
participants are biased, through ignorance.

     It  is important to assess the birth,  evolution  and
death   of  communal  symbols  and  their  meanings   with
integrity;   else  we may give birth to  and  promote  the
evolution of  disintegrative symbols, inhibit the creation
and evolution  of integrative  symbols,  and so foster the
disintegration of our communities  and  what meanings they
offer to us.

     The  power and significance of a community flows from
the integrity of its communal symbols and the coherent way
in which they  lead  the community to  allocate its scarce
resources   to   meet  individual  and  corporate   needs.
Communal  symbols  point to and often stand  for  communal
realities:   ideals, values, goals, dreams, fears, guilts,
alienations, rejections, etc.   The integrity and power of
the  community is intimately related to the integrity  and
power  of its set of communal symbols,  and how  they  are
