To sustain its integrity a community needs to celebrate its members' motivations to engage in cooperative integrative activities. In the absence of such celebrations, ideals which lead to disintegrative action are likely to motivate people to repress integrative activities and to view such repressions with respect and approval. Thus it is helpful for there to be formal and informal rituals to celebrate the varied motivations to engage in cooperative integrative activities. Integrative activities bring together complementary realities which are often viewed as being antithetical to each other; e.g., good and evil, respectable and loathsome, proper and improper, scientific and reflexive, objective and emotional, etc. People who view the poles of dichotomies as antithetical to their complementary other pole are bound by their ideals to act in ways to maintain the dichotomies; to oppose cooperative integrative activities in which the poles of the dichotomies are viewed as complementary to each other and appropriately included in an integrated whole. Such people's ideals undermine personal and communal integrity in the service of other ideals which they regard as of ultimate importance. In the service of their supreme ideals they undermine cooperative integrative activities. One of the most effective ways to undermine cooperative integrative activities is to inhibit the celebration of the motivations which move people into cooperative integrative activities. This may be done by articulating ideals in terms of which perceptions become perverted and integration of complementary realities is regarded as a perverted activity. Fanatical idealists can not bear to see their ideals be regarded as other than the ultimate ideals to which all other ideals must be sacrificed. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
