     By  focusing  science students'  conscious  attention
only   upon  explicit  messages,   scientists   implicitly
instruct students to consciously regard implicit  messages
as being unimportant.

     However,    by   supplementary   implicit    messages
scientists make  clear that it is important that conscious
attention  not be directed to making explicit the  content
of  certain of  the scientists'  implicit messages.   Thus
scientists  create  the  collusion  that   only   explicit
messages are important---and pretend that  they regard all
implicit messages as meaningless:   in  particular,   they
refuse  to  treat  other  people's  implicit  messages  as
important---unless such messages are first translated into
