                 %COMMUNAL ILLUSIONS VS. COLLUSIONS 861127

     Some people are held back in various ways.  We  point
to such ways with words such as  "reserved",  "inhibited",
"repressed", "withdrawn", "introverted".

     Some  teachers  are held back in  their relationships
with their students.  There are tensions as between:  Love
vs.   adversary  relationships.   Openness  vs.  defensive
relationships. Individualistic & competitive vs.  communal
&  cooperative.  Egalitarian vs. authoritarian.  Inclusive
vs. exclusive.

     People are  sometimes held back by  ideals  expressed
outside  the range of their propriety;  e.g.,  objectivity
vs.  sexuality;  scientists'  analytic  ideals  inhibiting
honest sexuality.

     We   can  not  be  objective  about  our  own  sexual
relationships and feelings --  these facts  challenge  the
paradigm  of objectivity  and so sexuality is repressed as
