UNA-USA/Northern Colorado Chapter
JUNE MEETING
We heard reviews of two interesting books. One was edited by Hugh Sanborn, our chapter's treasurer, and reviewed by him. It's titled The Prophetic Call: Celebrating Community, Earth, Justice and Peace. The other, reviewed by Maury Albertson of Village Earth, was After the Empire, by Emmanuel Todd, who predicted the fall of the Soviet Union.
WE ARE TAKING A BREAK\'85 from programs in July and August to have more time for planning and advocacy. To read reviews of some of our programs, see www.notess.com/ncuna or http://www.greeleynet.com/~notess/ncuna2.shtml
ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES
On June 15 Paul and Margaret Smith met with one of Rep. Musgrave's Loveland staff, as part of a group of six sponsored by Population Connection. We advocated for releasing the US's promised funding for UNFPA.
On June 21 Eleanor Dwight, Ken Tharp, Paul and Margaret Smith met with Betsy Markey, Sen. Salazar's Fort Collins office coordinator, and Melissa Koenigsberg, Sen. Salazar's Washington aide for foreign relations. We discussed a number of UN-related topics, and found both women interested in and knowledgeable about the UN.
We plan to set up meetings with Loveland staff of Sen. Allard and Rep. Musgrave in July or August.
Sam Rachid has set up a meeting on July 20 with the Coloradoan editorial board to bring the Millennium Goals to their attention. Sam, Maury Albertson, Valerie Baker-Easley and Margaret Smith plan to attend.
