* *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * *
* * WARNING * *
* * * *
* * Use these tutorial exercises ONLY if you * *
* * have found and read at least 30 essays and * *
* * have made extensive use of the JUMP Menu * *
* * features. These tutorials are NOT designed * *
* * for beginners! SKIP THEM UNTIL LATER! * *
* * * *
* * These tutorial exercises are designed to * *
* * help you become a skilled user of the many * *
* * features of the Essays System by carrying out * *
* * many of the possible procedures with * *
* * immediately available instructions to guide you. * *
* * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* *
* Introduction to Tutorials *
* *
* These instructions which follow are intended to be *
* read slowly and followed step by step in a very *
* deliberate manner. Treat the tutorial instructions much *
* as you would the instructions on how to assemble a piece *
* of furniture which has come in separate pieces which need *
* to be fastened together in the right order. Many of the *
* statements which follow are telling you what to do and in *
* what order; and when to come back for more instructions. *
* Some of the statements are factual statements, giving you *
* information. Seek to recognize the difference between *
* the two kinds of statements, and act accordingly. *
* *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* *
* 0. Keep always in mind that the purpose of the essays *
* system is to enable you to selectively find and read *
* essays which are of interest to you. Seek and read such *
* essays to fulfill the purpose of the essays system. Do *
* the NOVICE Menu now. Press Esc until you reach the MAIN *
* Menu and then hold Alt down and press N , and follow *
* instructions. NOTE: Holding Alt down and pressing *
* N will be abbreviated as Alt/N . Similarly other *
* abbreviations will be used with other letters. *
* *
* 1. These tutorial exercises offer activities which you *
* can engage in to become familiar with the ways you can *
* use the Essays System. Reading these instructions *
* without at the same time using the Essays System would be *
* a waste of your time. For this reason these tutorial *
* exercises are provided only as an integrated part of the *
* computer based Essays System. *
* *
* 2. While engaged in the following tutorials remember *
* that the U key will serve as the toggle between viewing *
* this text and viewing the various menus you work with. *
* You will need to remember to press U to return here *
* for further instructions whenever you have completed *
* some process or get confused about what to do next. The *
* U toggle will work when you are viewing the NOVICE *
* Menu, MAIN Menu, 2nd Menu Report, TITLES Menu, and the *
* TEXT Menu. U will NOT work when you are using the *
* JUMP Menu, X-Ray Menu, viewing a help screen or a flow *
* chart; or you are in the middle of entering text. *
* *
* Usually when NOT viewing a help screen you may use the *
* Z key to toggle the use of the bottom line of the *
* window frame. You may make that line show which [Menu] *
* you are in and what keys you may use where you are. *
* Press the Z key a number of times now. *
* *
* You can tell where you are within the current [Menu] by *
* where the block of light at the right or left edge of *
* the window frame is. Now press PgDn a few times and *
* PgUp the same number of times to watch the block of *
* light move down and up along the right edge of the *
* window frame. *
* *
* At any time you are in the MAIN Menu or a 2nd Menu Report *
* you can press the J key to goto the JUMP Menu to *
* help you find your way around the MAIN Menu. Press U *
* and goto the MAIN Menu now and there press J to try *
* out the JUMP Menu. From the JUMP Menu try the NOVICE *
* command if you have not already done so. In the JUMP *
* Menu screens references to the NOVICE Menu appear as N- *
* words, N-titles, and N-read. *
* *
* 3. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu and there press *
* Home . While looking at the line like the following *
* line: *
* *
* ADJUST BRIGHTNESS CONTROLS TO SEE THIS HIGHLIGHTED *
* *
* do adjust the brightness control to see the effect *
* of such adjustments and set the controls to suit *
* yourself. This is important, because if you do not do *
* this you may not recognize important highlighted *
* instructions, especially on monochrome screens. *
* *
* 4. Press U to goto the MAIN Menu, and press Alt/N *
* to present the %NOVICE command. Then press Enter to *
* goto the NOVICE Menu. Follow instructions there on how *
* to use the NOVICE Menu. It gives you access to all the *
* text of all available essays, but with limited *
* options for searching for titles using keywords. You can *
* return to your place here in the TUTOR Menu by pressing *
* U when you are using the NOVICE, MAIN, 2nd Menu *
* Report, TITLES or TEXT Menu. *
* *
* 5. Press U and use the NOVICE Menu to get a sense of *
* how the Essays System calls up titles and texts of *

* Enter to view the text of the selected essay. *
* *
* 6. Press U and while using the NOVICE Menu take note *
* of the helps which appear at the bottoms of the TITLES *
* Menu and the TEXT Menu screens. They remind you of most *
* of the commands that are operative in each Menu. Do not *
* ignore the presence of those reminders at the bottom of *
* the screens. *
* *
* The TITLES Menu and TEXT Menu which are reached via the *
* NOVICE Menu are the same as when they are reached through *
* the MAIN Menu AND 2nd Report Menu options. *
* *
* 7. Press Esc and while using the Novice Menu use the *
* H command to get help. When using the NOVICE Menu you *
* cannot use the commands which are available at the MAIN *
* Menu to view flow charts and lists of keywords. With *
* the NOVICE Menu you cannot do complex searches for *
* keywords in essay titles. The H key presents helps *
* appropriate to the menu you are using. *
* *
* 8. Press U and press Esc till you get to the MAIN *
* Menu. The NOVICE Menu is a simplified alternative *

* avoid getting involved in complicated MAIN Menu *
* %COMMANDS too early. *
* *
* 9. When you are viewing the MAIN Menu, pressing Esc *
* repeatedly will move you towards an exit from the Essays *
* System. To actually exit the Essays System you must *
* finally press Alt/X . You may instead press N or J *
* to stay and go to the NOVICE Menu or the JUMP Menu. *
* *
* When you are viewing the MAIN Menu pressing S will *
* start a menu-search for a word you will be asked to *
* specify; searching will be through the text of the MAIN *
* Menu from where you are at the beginning of the search *
* and moving towards the end of the MAIN Menu. Often you *
* may need to press Home before you press S so that *
* you will be searching the full text of the MAIN Menu. *
* After you have found the first appearance of a word in *
* the MAIN Menu with the S earch procedure, you can *
* press S and immediately press Enter to find the *
* next appearance of the same word. Now press U and *
* goto the MAIN Menu and search for the following words *
* and read the related texts. *
* *
* HIGHLIGHT COLOR DEBUG FIX *
* *
* 10. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu and repeatedly *
* press the PgDn key to see the effect of repeatedly *
* pressing it. You will see highlighted at the top of each *
* screen the %COMMANDS which are the core of the Essays *
* System. Press PgDn repeatedly till you get to the *
* last of the list of %COMMANDS. Watch the marker at the *
* right edge of the screen record your progress. *
* *
* PgDn will NOT move you all the way to the end of the *
* MAIN Menu. Repeatedly press Right-Arrow to move on to *
* the end of the MAIN Menu. Then press PgUp repeatedly *
* till you get back to the beginning. This exercise moves *
* you all the way to the end, and then back to the *
* beginning of the file SEEWORDS.DOC which contains the *
* core instructions for the Essays System, and which also *
* plays a central role in the execution of the commands *
* described in the SEEWORDS.DOC document. *
* *
* 11. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu and while holding *
* down the Alt key press the S ; i.e., Alt/S . Then *

* description of the %SEEWORDS command, the primary *
* %COMMAND of the Essays System. The %SEEWORDS command *
* finds titles of essays with search-words which you type *
* in. Many of the %COMMANDS are designed to help you find *
* useful search words to use with the %SEEWORDS command. *
* *
* 12. While in the MAIN and 2nd Menu by holding down Alt *
* and pressing the key of the first letter of a %COMMAND *
* you can get a description of that command to appear on *
* screen. Press U to goto the MAIN Menu or 2nd Menu and *
* there use Alt + Letter to bring to screen the *
* brief descriptions of the following commands. *
* *

* %YOKE %THESARUS %WORDPAIR *
* %SEEWORDS %COUNTWDS %QUICKPAR *
* %GETTITLE %VIEWWORD %MISCELLA *
* %LISTITLE *
* *
* 13. Do not yet take time to read the full descriptions. *
* Note that the lower right corner of the screen tells you *
* what menu you are using. Pressing Z toggles the *
* bottom line to show, or not show, your menu location in *
* detail. *
* *
* 14. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu. There, when you *
* are looking at the description of any of the above *
* %COMMANDS you may use the arrow keys to move the text of *
* the description up/down in small steps using Up-Arrow *
* and Dn-Arrow , or in large steps using Left-Arrow and *
* Right-Arrow . *
* *
* Use Alt/K to get the %KEYWORDS command description, *
* and use the arrow keys to move the text so you can read *
* all of the descriptions. Then use the Left-Arrow and *
* Right-Arrow keys to move back and forward through the *
* MAIN Menu to the description of the %COMMANDS which *
* appear before and after the %KEYWORDS command *
* description. You should thus get a feel of the *
* organization of the document which you are examining *
* when you are reading the descriptions in the MAIN Menu. *
* You are scrolling through a document, and you have quick *
* access to different parts of the document with the Alt *
* + Letter commands. The PgDn and PgUp keys give *
* you sequential access to commands if you forget names and *
* need to review what options are available. *
* *
* 15. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu. There press in *
* turn the Home and End keys to quickly move to the *
* beginning and end of the MAIN Menu document. At and just *
* before the End of the MAIN Menu you will find summary *
* descriptions of all of the commands for moving through *
* the document, as well as brief descriptions of the *
* %COMMANDS. You must use Arrow keys to be able to view *
* all parts of the end of the MAIN Menu document. Keep *
* the location of the end-of-document summary in mind *
* when you are using the MAIN Menu. *
* *
* 16. Press U and goto the MAIN Menu. There press the *
* Home key and then repeatedly press the Right-Arrow *
* key. Do not yet take time to read the text. Just note *
* that there is quite a bit of introductory text. At this *
* point just note the headings in the text to get an idea *
* of the topics covered in the introductory text. When you *
* get to the %YOKE command repeatedly press the *
* Left-Arrow key to get back to the beginning. Remember *
* where the information you have just seen is located, so *
* you can call it to screen quickly when you need it. *
* *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * This is the end of the tutorial lessons which * *
* * are included in the shareware copies of the * *
* * Essays System. The registered copies of the * *
* * Essays System contain about 90 more tutorial * *
* * paragraphs (c) COPYRIGHT 1993 by Paul A. Smith * *
