No effort has been made to minimize the redundancy which is present in the texts of the essays. There have been various reasons for not making such an effort:
1. Any such effort heightens the temptation to edit out the portions of essays which point to the most uncomfortable and confusing truths.
2. Attempts to reduce redundancy would inevitably eliminate from the texts some portions which point to slightly different aspects of reality as they are perceived by different people in differing circumstances.
3. Such editing would often do violence to the integrity of the representation of the stream of consciousness in which the texts of the essays came to the writer.
