Such a public mission statement lets the public know what to expect of those who make it known --- so that members of the public may be attracted for services or to be of service --- with those working to fulfill the stated mission. It is sometimes difficult to sort out what are the operative components in a "mission statement". What are the ultimate values which are affirmed? What are the legitimate means which may be used in seeking to fulfill the mission statement? What are means which are NOT legitimate? What affirmations MUST be avoided? What affirmations must be denigrated? Some of these questions are never asked --- but yet are answered in tacit/hidden ways which are not published. Some groups become focused upon some means, technology, tools or machinery; rather than upon anything having to do with humane; relationships, ideals, values, virtues, reverence, etc. Some groups become focused upon trying to UNILATERALLY: manage, change, indoctrinate, save, redeem, or rescue people. Some groups UNILATERALLY try to eliminate "evil" from wherever they discern "evil" to reside; e.g., in certain people, groups, or places. When we consider overt or covert missions of various people or groups --- we need to be aware of and beware of UNILATERAL "missions" which are prone to evolve in ways which threaten the "Essential Foundations for Personal and Communal Integrity." Such missions often become idolatrous! (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
