They are aware of and respond to prudent guidelines in wise ways; --- yet they are not slaves to them --- nor are they compulsively rebellious against rules. Other people's expectations, rules, demands and requirements are not determinative for them --- in either subservience or in rebellion. Authentic people are not who they are in response to the coercive efforts of domineering people. Authentic people recognize, name, describe, understand, transcend and subvert domineering people's efforts to control those aspects of human lives which cannot be controlled; e.g., attitudes, emotions, dreams, yearnings, hopes, aspirations, desires, thoughts, and sub-conscious communications. Authentic people are not controlled by external criteria and considerations. They are true to themselves and to each other in authentic dialogue. Authentic people are the fruits of open and honest intimate relationships which transcend human isolations, alienations, and excommunications. Authentic people are role models of how people can promote and facilitate both personal and communal integrity. They do not demand conformity as they demonstrate integrity in who they are within well integrated unique relationships. Who they are is defined by how they are themselves within well integrated unique relationships; not by whom they exclude from their relationships, considerations, and communities of dialogue. Authentic people are not who they are through either conformity or rebellion against expectations of conformity on the part of domineering people. Authentic people transcend the expectations and demands of domineering people. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
