If we think we know it all, pretend to know it all, or are trying too hard --- we are likely to know too little. Arrogance, pretense, and trying too hard --- tend to block familiarity, intimacy, friendships, learning, conversations, communion, communications, dialogue --- and so undermine both personal and communal integrity. We cut ourselves off from opportunities to learn and know more --- whenever we approach each other, our relationships and/or our situations --- in ways which are: manipulative, coercive, violent, and/or threaten the integrities of: ourselves, each other, and/or our communities. Our being preoccupied with issues of control in any way --- tends to cut ourselves and each other off from opportunities to truly learn and know more about ourselves, each other, our relationships and our communal situations. The harder we try to be (or to appear to be) in control --- the less we learn and the less we can know and remember ---about ourselves, each other, our relationships and our communal situations; and the more likely we are to make tragic mistakes because of our alienations.
