Specialists find it easier to be outstanding than generalists; because there are few people who are knowledgeable enough to appreciate the integrity of really wise people who have broad knowledge and understanding, but are not outstanding in any specialized way. Religious leaders specialize in different ways of achieving salvation and/or of knowing who is and who is not saved. Some specialize in good works. Others specialize in the affirmation of good laws, prescriptions, proscriptions and taboos. Yet others specialize in the performance of proper rituals. Even others specialize in the interpretation of scriptures and doctrines. Through specialization each finds a way to think highly of themselves, and less highly of others who have specialized in less important ways. Each specialist, of course, has specialized in a way which they have come to regard as the most important way. Each specialist looks down on other specialists who have specialized in ways which are far less important than the way in which they themselves have specialized. To each, their speciality is the means to salvation and comfortable self-righteousness. Among specialists, few specialize in working for balance among all the things that specialists focus upon narrowly. It is hard to specialize in being balanced; but in the absence of balanced-people, specialists are bound to become contentious with each other whom they cannot respect because they have specialized in unimportant ways.
