It is important on occasion to recognize, name, describe and talk about just what it is that is most important to preserve. What can we prudently sacrifice in the effort to preserve what is most important? How are we to set our priorities in best fulfilling our self- preservation instincts? 1. Reputations and good impressions? 2. Appearances and "good" looks? 3. Appearances of never making mistakes? 4. Appearances of invulnerability? 5. Integrity of physical body? 6. Integrity of physical possessions? 7. Integrity of immediate family? 8. Integrity of extended family? 9. Integrity of our home? 10. Integrity of our clan? 11. Integrity of our work-place? 12. Integrity of neighborhood? 13. Integrity of our community? 14. Integrity of our state? 15. Integrity of our nation? 16. Integrity of our planet? 17. Ecological integrity? 18. Business integrity? 19. Our health? 20. Progressional integrity? 21. Self esteem? 22. Self assessment? 23. Ideals and values? 24. Hopes and aspirations? 25. Personal honor and reputation? 26. Family honor and reputation? There are a multitude of ways in which we may define what it is that we need to protect; and a multitude of ways in which we may decide what it is that we may sacrifice in the process of protecting that which we need to protect. Does protection entail preventing change? Is that which it is most important to protect---to be protected from all change? If that which we need to protect can be permitted to change in some ways; in what ways can we with integrity permit change? These are not simple questions! Our continued integrity depends upon how we answer and otherwise respond to them. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
