It may be helpful to formulate some patterns of words by which to clearly point to some of the aspects of the warp and woof of the fabric of our responses. Not all human behavior is in clear response to previous human behaviors; yet some human behavior is in clear response to previous human behaviors. It will be helpful to refer to the latter behavior as "response"- "response" behavior wherein the first word "response" may be replaced by a word which suggests the nature of the previous behavior to which the second word points. A "manipulation-response" is a response of one person to another person's efforts to manipulate them. A "kindness-response" is a response of some person to another person's kindness. A "robbery-response" is a person's response another person's act of robbery. A "rape-response" is the response of a person to being raped or a loved-one's being raped. An "rejection-response" is the response of a person t0 being rejected by another person or group. An "acceptance-response" is the response of a person to being accepted by another person or group. The significance and meaning of a human action depends upon whether it is a response-response and upon what kind of response it is; if it is a response-response. The relational context of our actions are very important in any effort to understand human actions; and in any efforts to respond wisely to human actions and response- responses. A prediction-response is a response to a human prediction. An expectation-response is a response to human expectations. A demand-response is a response to human demands. A punishment-response is a response to a human punishment. An alienation-response is a response to an occasion of human alienation. We will do well to be careful to participate in the pattern of human responses with due awareness of and respect for the contexts of other people's responses and of our own responses. If we do not do so, our communal fabrics are not likely to be coherent, and we are not likely to enjoy personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
