(The quote is from the University of Chicago announcement of a Midwest Faculty Seminar on Critiquing Objectivity, held January 12 - 14, 1995.) We can be objective about specific objects, only to the extent that we are indifferent about their integrity and their personal significant to us and our dear ones as unique persons. We can be objective about ideals and values, only to the extent that we are indifferent to the ideals and values, and indifferent to the people who embody and/or oppose the ideals and values. We can be objective about mistakes, only to the extent that we do not care about the people who made the mistakes and about the nature of the mistakes. We can be objective about the achievements and failures of our students, only to the extent that we are indifferent to them as people and indifferent to how well we have helped them to transcend their learning difficulties. We can be objective about tragedies, only to the extent that we are indifferent to the people, ideals and values which have led the people into the tragedies. We can be objective about our environment, only to the extent that we do not care about our dependence upon our environment for our own survival. We can be objective about the objects of our objectivity, only to the extent that we are willing to analyze, predict and control them to make them conform to our intentions and will---regardless of the consequences to us. We can be objective, only to the extent that we are indifferent about the objects of our objectivity. We cannot be objective about ourselves, because we cannot detach from ourselves. We cannot be objective about those nearest and dearest to us, while they are nearest and dearest to us; be they parents, lover, spouse, children, relatives, friends, etc. We cannot be objective about those people whose integrity we respect, admire and honor; or about their ideals, values, decisions, actions, achievements and tragedies. We cannot be objective about our creations which we are proud of, or about our creations which turned out tragically. We cannot be objective about how well we fulfill our ideals and values; e.g., about how successful we are in being objective. When people claim in any way that they are being objective, we will be wise to reflect upon their claim and seek to see clearly and honestly whom they are deceiving, if they are not being truly objective. Objectivity is often only an appearance which is achieved at the expense of honesty and integrity. Appearances of objectivity do not merit respect, honor or support if they are achieved at the expense of honesty and integrity. When objectivity merits respect, honor and/or support the grounds for such merit is not essentially detachment. The grounds for such merit have much to do with honesty, integrity, justice, balance, conflict resolution, due process, mutuality and being personally present in reliable ways---all of which lead to cooperation, mutual appreciation and respect.
