People who are insecure and are seeking to live in terms of unconditional commands---are not inclined to give much thought or attention to other people's experiences, perceptions, desires, hopes, aspirations, fears or needs. It is difficult to function in terms of commandments which are sensitive to reflexive considerations---because the images of what is responsible reflect back and forth with limitless complexity. How can we ever be secure in the certainty that the commandments in terms of which we are trying to be perfect---fit previously un-encountered unique situations which we could not have imagined in advance? There are principles, guidelines, suggestions, descriptions, stories and observations which can be helpful in many diverse situations in helping us discern what will be the most creative and appropriate response in each situation and/or circumstance. Such help is not mandatory and does not come with threats of alienative punishments. Many commandments which are issued are regarded as mandatory and do come with threats of alienative punishments, rejections, and excommunication. Such threatening commandments are not helpful, and do not merit our respect or support. Often alienation flows not from the principles, guidelines, suggestions, descriptions, stories and observations which are offered; but from the threatening, coercive and manipulative ways in which they are offered-- -in the form of unconditional commandments with threats of punishment and excommunication if the commandments are not obeyed.
