People who make credible commitments to such minimization cannot maintain the credibility of their commitments, so long as they use any of the tools which they have committed themselves to minimize the use of. To be credible people, those who have committed themselves to minimize the alienative uses of particular tools must themselves avoid the alienative use of those tools. Use of alienative tools in efforts to prevent other people from using alienative tools is not a credible way to work to minimize the use of alienative tools. When they are used as manipulative tools---threats, misunderstanding, violence, coercion, deception, dishonesty, controls, confusion, ignorance, repression, alienation, evil, fear, guilt, shame, and anxiety are all alienative tools. They cannot be used with integrity in efforts to minimize their use. People who use alienative tools in efforts to minimize their use have not made a credible commitment to minimize their use, and so do not merit trust. People who are not trustworthy cannot work to minimize the use of alienative tools. Technocrats are more preoccupied with the celebration and use of technologies, than with minimizing the alienative use of tools. Alienation is not a significant, conscious concern to technocrats because alienation is not an objective reality. Yet, technocrats will use alienation as a manipulative tool. Because of the nature of their primary concerns and training, technocrats cannot be trusted to work to minimize the alienative use of technologies, techniques and technocrats. They do not elicit trust in the midst of conflict, and so cannot work effectively to resolve conflicts. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
