We may gain some insights into the motivations and dynamics of the processes of separation by recognizing that people who have not actively integrated their intellectual, rational, thinking and objective aspects with their emotional, affective, reflexive, moral and sympathetic aspects---are likely to become involved in monstrous violence and threats of violence. They separate themselves from other people and become insensitive manipulators of people who are treated as if they are just objects trapped in manipulative objective relationships which are devoid of justice and mercy. People often desensitize themselves to protect themselves against the emotions which they do not know how to integrate into being whole in a community with integrity---and so they have no holy laws of human compassion or mercy written in their hearts. Thus they can commit rape, murder, terrorist acts and terrible acts of war---with little feeling, regret, sorrow or learning. We need to recognize, name, describe, articulate and talk about all the costs to humankind---for our failure to integrate our emotional, affective and spiritual lives--- with our cognitive, intellectual and rational lives of analytic understanding, predictions, objective manipulations, and attempting to be in control. The most effective way we have to protect ourselves against any awareness of the fears, pains and suffering which we cause in others---is to deaden our awareness of our own fears, pains and suffering; for our own are the grounds of any possible sympathy we may have with those of others people. Thus we objectify/depersonalize ourselves and our relationships as the most effective way to mitigate our own fears, pains and suffering---which might make us sensitive to other people's fears, pains and suffering. We often protect ourselves by replacing our sympathetic emotions (which are grounded in our own awareness of our own feelings) with sophisticated systems of rules, regulations, prohibitions, prescriptions and taboos---for such systems are free of the reflexive complexities of intimate affective relationships. Such sophisticated systems are encouraged and facilitated by respect for objectivity and all the scientific powers of analytic understanding, prediction and control. The dysfunctional replacement of our emotions with formal systems of control is often carried out in the name of unbiased knowledge and truth---but the replacement is really carried out in keeping with the rules of collusive games of mutual self deception; in keeping with the fixations of addicts and their supportive codependents.
