     Usually  we think of mistakes as failures to do  what
is known to be proper, right and/or helpful. Such systemic
mistakes  do  occur,   and  to minimize them  we  need  to
understand  more  than  we  do  regarding  what  leads  to
failures to do what is known to be  proper,   right and/or
helpful.  Such understanding is not easily gained.

     We  need  to recognize that not all mistakes are  due
to failures  to   do  what  is  known  to be proper, right
and/or helpful.   Many  mistakes occur  even as people are
doing what they  regard  as proper,  right and/or helpful.
Such mistakes are systemic mistakes---into  which   we are
lead    by     our     mistaken beliefs,   convictions and
understandings.  Such  mistakes flow from earlier mistakes
in      choosing     paradigms,      beliefs, convictions,
assumptions,   attitudes,   friends,   allies,   and other
grounds for our  ultimate concerns.  Early  mistakes often
mask  the real roots  of the mistakes to  which  the early
mistakes  lead.     Thus  recognizing the roots   of   our
trials  and tribulations may not be easy,  and we may find
it difficult  to   be  true  to  ourselves and each  other
