The emphasis is upon appearance, rather than upon reality. Rationalization is often not associated with genuine efforts to discover, clarify and share the truth. Rationalization is often associated with efforts to repress, confuse, misrepresent and withhold the truth. Successful rationalizations lead people to accept misleading assumptions, attitudes, statements and thought patterns at face value without critical thought or conversations. Successful rationalizations often inhibit critical people's thoughts and conversations in the manner of collusive addicts and their supportive codependents. At its worst rationalization is the process of violently defending a collusion with its dishonest paradigm. Addicts and their codependent supporters are very skilled in the process of rationalization, and mislead others to follow them into the process; so they become converts to the paradigm, collusions, addictions and patterns of codependent support thereof. The skillful involvement in the process of rationalization requires a high level of intelligence and knowledge. Young children may have the intelligence, but often they have inadequate knowledge to engage skillfully in the process of rationalization. Simple adults of low intelligence and non-academic interests rarely have the required intelligence and knowledge to engage in skillful rationalization. Highly educated people are far more likely to have both the intelligence and the knowledge required for skillful engagement in the process of rationalization. Many highly respected leaders have the levels of education, intelligence and knowledge to engage skillfully in the process of rationalization. They may be found in major positions of leadership in schools, colleges, universities, religious organizations, research centers, businesses, city government, state government and national government. In order to deal wisely with skillful rationalizers we need to be able to recognize, define, name and talk openly and honestly about what it is that rationalizers are doing to us. We need to learn how to confront honestly and charitably their patterns of collusive dishonesty, addictions and mutual codependent support. We need to speak truth to power which abuses reason, facts, logic, and people. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
