People who engage in dishonest activities for purposes of personal gain or for the advantage of hiding their own mistakes are non-conformists. People who engage in undisciplined sexual activity which is likely to lead to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexual diseases are non-conformists People who do not speak their language in keeping with standards for pronunciation, grammar and syntax generate confusion as non-conformists. People who operate in terms of a non-conformal belief system are hard to understand and are regarded as unreliable non-conformists who cannot be trusted. It is often true that non-conformists engage in activities which are threats to the communal integrity and to the sense of security and well being of members of the community. Thus non-conformity is often regarded with strongly negative connotations. The most creative people are non-conformists in their creativity. They do things which have not been done before. Thus we are presented with the dilemma of knowing how to recognize, describe and talk about the difference between threatening non-conformity and positive creative non-conformity. Non-conformists are a threat to communal and personal integrity when they: 1. Are dishonest, deceptive and/or misleading. 2. Overtly threaten people's personal integrity. 3. Overtly threaten people's communal integrity. 4. Try to control people when they have no authority. 5. Violate integrative rules, regulations, or rights. 6. Engage in personally manipulative behaviors. 7. Conceal truths which people have a right to know. 8. Show willful insensitivity to people's desires. 9. Are willfully unbalanced in extreme ways. 10. Pretend that highly risky behaviors are not risky. Non-conformists are not a threat to communal and personal integrity when they: 1. Point to and/or speak uncomfortable truths. 2. Threaten the respectability of a collusion. 3. Reveal the dishonesty of a powerful addict. 4. Expose powerful codependent supporters' deceit. 5. Creatively transcend traditions which are idols. 6. Ask questions which transcend a paradigm. 7. Refuse to join a collusive or addictive group. 8. Make clear the rules of an operative collusion. 9. Refuse to respect people who lack integrity. 10. Are true to themselves and to each other. We need to learn how to clarify instances in which non-conformists are/are-not a threat to personal and communal integrity. We also need to learn now to clarify instances in which communities as communities lack integrity and are a threat to the integrity of creative members of the community. Communities as communities are a threat to the personal integrity of members of the communities when they: 1. Communities are not threats to the personal integrity of their members when they: 1. A failure to recognize, articulate, and talk about essential distinctions can lead to confusion and to both personal and communal disintegration. All too often people have regarded non-conformists as inherently threatening and have regarded any sign of a person's willingness not to conform as a threat, even if it only involved non-conformal clothing or hair length. Non-conformity is not in and of itself a threat. A willingness not to conform is not in and of itself a threat. A sign that one is willing not to conform is not in and of itself a threat. Greater care needs to be taken than has often been taken to evaluate how threatening to personal and communal integrity any particular instance of non-conformity is. Excommunicating non-conformists who are not a true threat to personal and communal integrity is a major threat to personal and communal integrity. Such excommunications have generated a great deal of personal and communal disintegration in the course of human history. There is much to be learned from the reading of the history of such excommunications. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
