When we make unrealistic commitments/demands which do not deal honestly with human finitude as regards resources, powers, knowledge, cooperation, and conflict resolution---we set the stage for future conflict. We have deceive ourselves and perhaps other persons if we are surprised when the drama we set up plays itself out. Procrastinating the giving of attention to unavoidable tasks pushes into the future the resolution of present conflicts; and so generates more intense conflicts in the future---as the price for not honestly seeking to resolve today's conflicts in a timely way. Much of our conflict originates in our refusal to be honest about our limitations. If we were honest about our time limitations, power limitations and resource limitations; we would be realistic about what goals can be achieved within specific intervals of time, and which goals cannot be achieved. Much of our conflict has to do with trying to maintain false appearances; pretending until the last minute that we will be able to do what we have subconsciously known all along that we could not get done by the falsely agreed to deadline. When time passes and accomplishments are not achieved in a timely way; in keeping with our previous patterns of dishonesty we may resort to additional dishonesty---and keep on pretending. We may pretend that the job did get done, that we never really said we would do the job, that not getting the job done is the fault of others, or that there were circumstances which we could not have anticipated, etc. Such pretense just accumulates into the future our conflicts which are as yet unresolved. In this way our conflicts between the truth and our pretenses accumulate between us and the possibility of personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
