It is just as important to take note of what is avoided, neglected, repressed, suppressed and the focus of embarrassment; as it is important to take note of what is declared to be important by its publicly affirmed presence. Some of the most important dilemmas of a community are revealed by the issues and conflicts which it diligently avoids; rather than by the issues and conflicts upon which it focuses much public attention. It is important to take note of what kinds of people who dominate public attention. Is much or little public attention focused upon the actions, sayings and writings of: authority figures? scientists? children? formal teachers? objectivists? poets? political leaders? medicine men? business men women? girls? boys? writers? speakers? singers? competitors? cooperators? fighters? creative people? conformists? critics? non-conformists? military leaders? peace makers? doctors? nurses? counselors? In each instance is attention focused upon reflexive considerations, or upon objective considerations? Is there balance as to what is given favorable public attention? What topics of secret attention are not topics of public attention? What topics which might reasonably be given public attention, are not given public attention; what is systematically ignored? Through careful consideration to these questions it may become evident what collusions are operative in a community; and what steps need to be taken to recover from the addictions and codependencies which characterize the community and undermine its health.
