To gain tenure the science professor must show more dedication to research and publication than to students; for excessive dedication to helping students is clearly counter-indicated by the typical university's system of rewards and punishments. To survive she must be preoccupied with research and publications, not with students who are having learning difficulties. To show signs of interest in understanding students' learning difficulties is dangerous, for such interest is in violation of the paradigm's collusive games of mutual self deception regarding being objective at all times and cost. The personally sensitive science professor must not be overly sensitive to her students as persons, for such sensitivity is in violation of the scientists' collusive games of mutual self deception regarding being objective at all times. Personal involvement with students as human beings is counter-indicated by the typical university's system of rewards and punishments. Such involvement is not, and cannot be objective, and so is taboo. When the potential science professor becomes aware of the conflict between professional security and advancement on the one hand, and being responsive to students as human beings with learning difficulties, on the other hand; she is faced with a difficult choice which depends upon where in her professional life she is: (1) As a junior or senior high school student she may decide that science is not for her; or that she will repress her awareness of the conflict and do violence to people who get in the way of her professional advancement. (2) As a college or university student she may decide to shift away from the more exact and demanding sciences to the social sciences which are not as mathematically demanding; or become accultrated to the norms of the male addictive profession in order to try to survive.
