We need to seek a wider perspective from which to perceive the aspects of disintegrative relationships which undermine our personal and communal integrity. We need to articulate those aspects of our relationships which lead them and us to lose our integrity. Through the distance of generalization and abstraction regarding those disintegrative aspects we may free ourselves to perceive the foolishness of respecting and accepting essentially disintegrative aspects of our being and relating as we are. It may be too threatening to ourselves and others to deal directly with particular aspects of being and relating in the context of an immediate controversy over: evolution, religion, nationalism, sexuality, birth, death, population growth, planetary resources, law, order, politics, education or family life. It may be less threatening to deal with general statements regarding aspects of being and relating which lead to disintegration and to integration; without immediately connecting the general statements to any present controversy. It may be more helpful to talk about the need for openness, honesty, trust and conflict resolution, and how to promote them; rather than to deal directly with the issues of the present controversy in which such aspects are needed. Laying the foundations for integrative work may involve diverting attention away from the particular positions and issues of the present controversy so that we can focus our attention upon the essential aspects of integrative work. Many people find it difficult to deal with generalizations and abstractions. They deal most readily with specific objects, people, relationships and realities. They may be helped to lay the foundations for integrative work through conversations regarding previous controversies, and examples of previous conflict resolution with regards to which they have not taken positions. History offers many examples of conflicts and the resolution of conflicts. Those examples can be used to illustrate those aspects of being and relating which contribute to integration/disintegration. To see clearly we need both the particular examples and the insights by which the particular examples are connected to serve as illustrations of important generalizations which at a later date may shed light upon a present conflict which is in need or resolution.
