Known evils often appear preferable to us to unknown alternatives which offer release from known evils; especially when known evils offer us promises of order and control, but the unknown alternatives do not offer promises of assured control. We are seduced by promises of controlled order because we fear disorder and chaos in what we perceive to be uncontrolled change. For this reason addictive people who offer promises of control can seduce us into believing that the control which they dishonestly offer, is preferable to the possibilities of integration through open and honest dialogue which promise no control. Thus false promises appear more attractive than the real possibilities of honesty and integrity. Systematic people who are preoccupied with control feel that through control bad things can be prevented, and good can be assured. They fear that in the absence of good systems of control good events will not be assured, and many bad things will be bound to occur. To them the world is inherently prone towards evil, and good things happen only through the efforts of good people exercising appropriate control over the forces of evil. In such a context people naturally fear change which comes about in the absence of orderly forces which are keeping the change under systematic control. Such fear tends to undermine the works of love, and to generate much alienation, misunderstanding, and ignorance. In such a context it is difficult for people to engage in cooperative, coherent and well informed decision making which is wise and integrative. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
