     Researchers    often   seek  to  identify  cause  and
effect   by  looking  for  positive  correlations  between
observed effects and presumed causes.

     It  is relatively easy to focus attention upon causes
and effects   which  are  regularly in mind   because   of
their  obvious  presence.    It is far  more  difficult to
hypothesize possible   connections  between   causes   and
effects   when  either  or  both of them  do  not  fit the
dominant  paradigm's definition  of what is important,  or
else when either  or both  of  them have to do with a lack
or absence   of  some thing,      quality,      attribute,
process,       procedure,    relationship,       dialogue,
listening,    or   presence---especially when the lack  or
absence is not recognized as a lack or absence because  of
a collusion.

     These considerations need to  be  kept  in  mind when
looking  for   the   causes of  disease,    human failure,
alienation, violence,  frustration, drop-outs,  attrition,
confusion, addiction, codependence, etc.

     It   may   be useful to check to see what  factor  or
set  of  factors   correlates   through  absence  in   the
instances of concern. Are factors GA, GB, GC and GD absent
in common in  instances  which are of concern;  and is  at
least one aspect of them present in instances which do not
