We select who we want to accept and love us. We decide that we want the love and affection of some people, more than we want the love and affection of other people. In those selections and decisions we make some of the most important selections and decisions of our lives. How we play out our lives depends on whom we are playing t as an audience. The values, ideals, assumptions of our audience will be mirrored in the drama of our lives. We will do well to choose for our audience people who are healthy and truly worthy of our respect. If they are not honest people, we are unlikely to be honest. If we are not honest, we cannot be honest with ourselves to learn from our mistakes, and then we cannot avoid those diseases which flow from our mistakes. Our choices of friends, mentors, heroes and the like are o great importance. We will do well to make our choices thoughtfully with sensitivity to questions of health, integrity, honesty, and responsiveness. We become like the people we spend most of our time with. If we choose to be with unhealthy people as friends of choice, we are likely to become unhealthy. Our choices of friends may be more implicit than explicit. We may in our imagination choose people to play to as audience, with those people whom we have chosen while not being aware of our choice of them. Our drama and our audience may exist more in our imagination than in our overt daily life. Even so, our choices of people to be in our audience are important choices, for to them we play out the drama of our life. It is what we imagine that they will respond to positively which is that we do. In our imagination we court their favor, and in our reality it is our imaginary friends who rule our lives. We need to choose such powerful people carefully with careful consideration of questions of health, integrity, honesty, and responsiveness. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
