If a willingness to be of service is not prudently limited, addictive persons will take advantage of willing codependents who will sacrifice their own integrity in efforts to be of unlimited service to people who appear to be in need of unlimited service. By extension, anyone who is willing to sacrifice their own integrity in an effort to fix a situation for another person who is apparently unable to take care of themselves, is likely to fall into the trap of trying to fix all situations which seem to be unsatisfactory and are open to fixation. Such imprudently willing servants are likely to become fixated upon being of service, and so become involved in fixing situations which in their judgement are not satisfactory. They may intrude where they are not invited, yet are able to make themselves welcome by the services which they offer. They may encourage others to become addicted to the services which they sacrificially offer; they offer too good a deal to turn down because they offer it so sacrificially. Yet the deal turns sour through the development of addictive/codependent relationships of false needs and disintegrative services. Admonitions to be loving servants need to be coupled with teachings pertaining to loving your self as much as you love others; else you cannot love others very well, because you cannot love others any more than you love yourself. People who do not take care of their own integrity do not have the integrity to really love others with integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
