Science is not an objective reality which may be studied scientifically, because those who would study science scientifically must be scientists; and to be comprehensive their study must include the study of themselves in reflexive ways, which of essence cannot be objective in keeping with the scientific paradigm. Being reflexive is not being objective. The integrity of science is one with the character of the scientists who are the incarnation of the scientific paradigm. It is absurd to claim that the essence of science can be separate from the essence of those who are most highly respected as the most successful scientists. The most highly respected scientists lack personal and communal integrity because after decades of crises in science education they have yet to develop an understanding of the nature and roots of the crises which continue to undermine the integrity of science in the schools which incarnate the next generation of scientists. Science is not separable from its incarnations or from the process of incarnating the next generation of scientists. The integrity of science depends upon the integrity of the processes of incarnating the next generation of scientists, and upon the integrity of the communities which support that process of incarnation. Scientists who lack personal and communal integrity do not merit uncritical respect and support, for uncritical respect and support only encourages them to continue the addictive patterns of thought and behavior which have lead to their disintegration. The communities which uncritically respect and support disintegrative scientific and technological activities are playing codependent roles in support of people who are addicted to research without regard to the consequences of their addiction. They are like wives, husbands, parents, children, relatives and friends who uncritically and dishonestly support alcoholics and other persons addicted to fixes of choice, without honestly about the consequences of their addictions. We cannot recover from addictions without being honest with ourselves and others regarding the consequences of our dishonest respect and support of disintegrative activities. We cannot learn from mistakes which we falsely claim we have not made. We cannot avoid repeating mistakes which we falsely claim we have not made. The scientific paradigm is faulty in that anyone who seeks to perfectly embody it, inhibits honest reflexive examinations of the imperfections in its most successful incarnations. We need a far more personally and communally integrative paradigm if we as a species are to survive on our tiny planet. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
